Drove up to St Barbe, stopping at Port au Choix National Historic Site en route. It has the remains or four ancient cultures. (Maritime Archaic Indians, Dorset Paleo-Eskimo, Recent Indian, & Groswater Paleo-Eskimo). We saw our first moose today -in fact, a mom and calf pair. Three things are beginning to be very prevalent as we travel north. There are HUGE piles of cut firewood everywhere along the road -apparently, for $27 per year, each family is entitled to 7 cords of wood. 70% of homes here are heated with wood.

There are large caches of lobster traps piled on secondary roads and on family properties. Nothing is covered or contained as there appears to be no crime here. This sure wouldn't work where we live !!

There are many, many roadside gardens in the midst of nowhere -miles from any community. There is so little soil here on "the rock" that people take advantage of the topsoil that was pushed off the roadways when they were built. Again, these are unprotected, fenced only to keep the animals out. This feels like the safest place on earth!!
